Paulo Martins Barata

Paulo Martins Barata received an MArch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University Lisbon in 1988, an MBA from the University of Edinburgh in 1991, a PhD from ETH Zurich in 2000, and was Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University in New York.

He has published extensively on architectural theory and criticism, among others, in Arquitectura Viva, Lotus International, Prototypo, Architecture Research Quarterly and in Daidalos, in the latter serving also as member of the editorial board. He was Cass Gilbert Visiting Faculty at the University of Minnesota, visiting critic at the University of Texas at Austin and Northeastern University, and, more recently, guest critic at USI Accademia di architettura Mendrisio, in Switzerland.

He co-curated the Prototypo Seminar in Architecture, held under the auspices of Porto 2001, European Capital of Culture. In addition, he was curator of the seminar Hard Lead, under the auspices of the 2004 National Year of Architecture, and served as President of the Jury of the National Architecture Award (Secil) 2004 (Universities), and in 2006 as jury member for the National Award of Bulgaria. In 2010 he co-curated the international seminar of the Lisbon Architecture Triennial.

Between 2005 and 2010 he served as a member of the National Board of the Portuguese Order of Architects. In Graz, in 2003, Dr Martins Barata was appointed a member of the ECP (European Cultural Parliament), in which he served until 2011. He is currently working on an essay for the forthcoming catalogue Aldo Rossi: The Architecture and Art of the Analogous City (Princeton, 2023).
